Peter Tosh 1944-1987 (43)
Legalize it,
don't criticize it / Legalize it, yeah, and I will advertise it
He was the militant edge of the original Wailers, the voice that pushed reggae toward revolution where Bob Marley pushed toward unity. "Legalize It" (1976) was a direct political statement wrapped in a groove so deep it couldn't be ignored. Inducted into the Rock Hall in 1994. Killed during a home invasion in 1987, but his music never stopped being a threat to the status quo. More on Peter Tosh →

Grief as a catalog of small absences. The empty chair. The silence where her voice used to be. A voice that cracks under the weight of absence.

The Temptations released it in 1964 on Gordy/Motown. Luther Vandross covered it in 1988 on "Any Love," moving through the same room but finding a different corner.

He saw her the second she walked in. Work until morning comes and the walls climb themselves. Prince does not ask permission to take what he wants. Work is just another word for total surrender when the right person is involved.

Love Before Time
Recorded before the word vintage was a compliment to anyone at all. Basement doo-wop harmonies, kitchen-sink gospel, and back-porch blues — love songs from when a microphone was a rare luxury.

The Apprentice 2024
The Apprentice

A young Donald Trump, mentored by Roy Cohn, learns that the only rule in New York real estate is that there are no rules. Cohn teaches three principles: attack, admit nothing, claim victory. Trump applies them to buildings and eventually to a country. The O'Jays' 'For the Love of Money' scores the deal-making montage.

The 1973 warning about greed became the soundtrack of a man who never understood it was a warning directed at him. New York kept building. Trump did not listen.

Why We're Here
Most of us grew up with free radio. Then corporations took over the playlist. Then we found Spotify and YouTube -- until the algorithm quietly decided what we liked, and suddenly we were stuck on repeat again. There's so much music out there, and only so much time to hear it.
At HotSupper, we just want to open things up a little. Maybe you'll stumble on an artist you've never heard of. Maybe you'll rediscover a song you'd completely forgotten. Maybe you'll just tap your toes. Either way, it's yours to explore. And if you have ideas to make this place better, we're all ears.
