The blues had a baby and
they named it rock and roll.
Muddy Waters took the Mississippi Delta blues to Chicago, plugged in an electric guitar, and created the sound that became modern blues. Songs like I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man and Mannish Boy defined the Chicago blues sound. He influenced everybody from the Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix. More on Muddy Waters →

Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing 0:30 is a calm hand on your shoulder when the world is shaking. Not a solution. A presence. Someone who will not panic even when the way is unclear.

That steadiness is rare. Knowing somebody is there who refuses to break makes the hard parts bearable. The worry shrinks. That presence becomes its own kind of answer when no answers exist.

Anytime we have a date

Louis Jordan

Is he hers or is he not? Louis Jordan asks playfully. Confusion after someone leaves. Am I still loved? Big band swing made everybody dance to a question nobody wanted to answer. Some questions are better sung than asked directly with a straight face.

Hold On
When (when I) I had you (had you)
I treated you bad
She has been alone too long to risk losing this. He might walk away. She needs him to stay. Hold on when the night gets cold. Love worth having is worth fighting for when everything inside says give up and leave before getting hurt again.

You’re Kidding, Right
The Pointer Sisters won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1975 for "Fairytale." A Black female group from Oakland winning in a white-dominated country category? Nobody saw that coming. Black women winning a country Grammy in the 70s was almost unheard of. The Pointer Sisters didn't care about genre boundaries. They just made good music and let the Grammys figure it out.
Soul in the Movies
Pulp Fiction Tarantino didn't score Pulp Fiction. He curated it. Kool & the Gang's 'Jungle Boogie' opens the film over the credits -- all horns and attitude, a groove so infectious it warns you what kind of movie you're about to watch. Every song on the soundtrack is a character. Every needle drop is a conversation. Jungle boogie. Pulp Fiction was already in the jungle.

Why We're Here
Most of us grew up with free radio. Then corporations took over the playlist. Then we found Spotify and YouTube -- until the algorithm quietly decided what we liked, and suddenly we were stuck on repeat again. There's so much music out there, and only so much time to hear it.
At HotSupper, we just want to open things up a little. Maybe you'll stumble on an artist you've never heard of. Maybe you'll rediscover a song you'd completely forgotten. Maybe you'll just tap your toes. Either way, it's yours to explore. And if you have ideas to make this place better, we're all ears.
